Zeiss Ikon Folding Antique Camera

This Zeiss folding camera was a gift from my father's boss before he was deported home after the Second World War. Accessories include a red filter, self-timer and tripod. The camera uses 120 negatives. The film had to be rolled by hand after each shot, and a roll of film could take 16 shots. Aperture, shutter and focus distance also needed to be adjusted by hand. I used this camera from 1961 to 1979. The last time I took pictures was in 1979, in Kenting Park. The original case was a little oxidised and peeling, so I used green flannel to cover the entire case. The leather case is very well preserved.

Sony 902 5-inch Reel-to-reel Vacuum Tube Recorder

In 1968, when I was studying at the Taipei Institute of Technology, I bought a second-hand Sony 902 five-inch disc-type vacuum tube recorder for 600 yuan. For over fifty years, Recordings from that year are still available. More than 20 years ago, because the patent paper on the outer box peeled off a bit, I repainted it with paint, and it became what it is now.

I suspect that the number of vacuum tube tape recorders produced shortly after the war would not be many. In 1996, it suddenly occurred to me to write a letter to Sony company in Japan and ask if they still have the operating manual. Unexpectedly, Sony company not only sent Sony 902 operation manual, the circuit diagram is also attached to the catalog of various tape recorders produced over the years.

Products made in Japan in the twentieth century have a good reputation. The clue can also be seen from Sony's service attitude towards users. A few days ago, in order to take out six large, medium and small magnets, it tooks me three hours to disassemble two Pioneer oval horns, and once again I saw the beauty of Japanese craftsmanship in the 20th century. The older generation of craftsmen and technicians in Taiwan have also inherited this pragmatic and meticulous Japanese spirit to some extent. Unfortunately, it has gradually withered away.

Violin Made of Paper

Warrensburg is a small town in the state of Missouri, USA, named after John and Martin D. Warren, settlers from Europe, who founded it in 1835. Warrensburg was also the entrance to the Oregon Trail, the main caravan route for settlers coming from the east into the west. As a result there are many monuments and relics from the pioneering days of the West. In 1991 I saw this handmade paper fiddle in the Trash Treasures, a thrift shop in the main street and bought it to bring back to Taiwan. The fiddle was then scanned and saved as a graphic file. Later the image of paper violin was cut out carefully and added to the CD cover of my Taiwanese Speech Notepad.

Lloyd's Electronics - Six Transistor TR-6T Radio

The Regency TR-1 was the first transistor radio for civilian use, developed by the Regency Division of the Society of Industrial Development Engineers in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, and introduced to the market in November 1954. The price was US$49.95. This British made Lloyd's Electronics - Six Transistor TR-6T Radio was produced in 1965 and is a pocket sized radio that fits in a shirt pocket. It was selected as a prize in an essay competition organised by Kayo Pharmaceuticals when I was a student at Tainan City High School. I was told that it was worth NT$500 back then. The prize also included a trip to Japan and a gold raffle. Although I didn't win the first prize, this six-transistor radio made me look good for a long time. The only thing is that it is powered by a 9V battery, which I couldn't afford when I was a student, so I added a rectifier power supply and it became what it is now. A few days ago, I connected it to the battery and was able to listen to many radio stations, so I kept it as a souvenir.

The DOS Version of Multimedia CD

(VIKON Multimedia Editor for DOS) Demo

1. 從Internet 下載 dosbox-staging-windows-v0.75.0
2. 解壓後執行 dosbox.exe 會產生 dosbox-staging.conf 檔案
3. 將 dosbox-staging.conf 檔案中的 capture_mouse: 修改為 onstart (或 nomouse) fullscreen = true

(TITES Multimedia Player for DOS) Demo

In the days when I was studying computers, people who used computers had to write their own programs. The common programming languages at that time were Assembly, FORTRAN and COBOL. Even in the 1980s, after the advent of the personal computer, software applications were still fairly limited. People who are new to Microsoft's DOS operating system still have to write the applications they need. In 1990s I myself have written word processing, data management, multimedia editing and playback tools and expert system programs.

Around 1990, multimedia began to sprout in the United States, integrating text, pictures, sound, and video. popular to this day. In fact, the multimedia of DOS and Windows is not different in essence. Just run multimedia in DOS, you must install a high-end graphics card and sound card. In addition to spending a lot of money, both users and program developers must have a deeper understanding of the operating system. AS time goes by, The functionality and execution speed of the hardware has been greatly improved. Windows multimedia is relatively easy to use regardless of program developers or users. There were not many multimedia software in the DOS era. When the Windows system prevailed, innumerable software was like spring shoots after rain. With this trend, I have also ported programs developed in DOS to Windows. The multimedia editing and playback system that used to be in the DOS version was soon put on the shelf and became an antique.

Today's computers are almost incapable of executing DOS programs. However, the computer world is amazing. Many people have a soft spot for the DOS game software they have used. After thinking about it, some people even developed a DOS system emulator that can be executed in the new version of Windows. For example DOSBOX and DOSBOX staging. I use it to run DOS software developed in the 1990's on Windows 10 and it is almost fully compatible. Therefore, although it is an old multimedia CD, it is also worth collecting. Friends who have this CD in their hands, if you like to review this multimedia CD in win7/win10, you can follow the following methods:

1. Download dosbox-staging-windows-v0.75.0 from the Internet
2. Executing dosbox.exe after decompression will generate the dosbox-staging.conf file
3. Change capture_mouse: in the dosbox-staging.conf file to onstart (or nomouse) and fullscreen = true
4. After executing dosbox.exe, add mount e e:\ (if e: is a CD drive)
5. If you execute start from e:\ , you can view the DOS version of Jong-Teh's Music and Art album, but mpeg cannot be played.

Handmade Violin

This is a handmade violin by Mr. Mou-Sung Lin of Tainan Yayin Musical Instrument Shop in the 1960s. For more than 60 years, it has remained almost the same except for replacing the horsehair of the bow, the strings, and adding tuning screws. In 1970, a meal in a school cafeteria in Taipei cost about 4 to 5 yuan. At the Zhonghua Department Store Area, it costs 90 yuan to replace 180 horsetail hairs for a violin bow. Each horsetail hair costs 0.5 yuan, which is equivalent to an IBM 80-line card used in a computer.

Minolta Mini 35-II M Slide Projector

Minolta mini 35 II

Minolta Mini 35-II M slide projector was released in 1969. It was designed as a compact, portable projector for 35mm slides, offering ease of use and a compact size for personal or small group viewing. The slide projector shown in the picture can only display two slides at a time, and the slides must be changed manually after viewing. Optional accessories include cooling fans and automatic slide changer.

Ink Pen Holder and Ink Cartridge

During the Japanese occupation, national education in Taiwan began to become popular. However, since fountain pens were not yet popular, most students used pencils when practicing writing and used ink pens when writing formal documents. When writing with a pen, you often need to dip the ink, so an ink cartridge is essential. The ink pen holder and ink box shown in the picture were souvenirs given to my father by his Japanese boss when the boss was deported back to his country in 195. I started practicing calligraphy with an ink pen when I was in middle school. Although fountain pens were already available at that time, I felt that words written with ink pens were more beautiful. Because as long as you can control the flow of ink, the font can have more variations than writing with a fountain pen.

1981 Prince Charles and Princess Diana Wedding Commemorative Coin

This is a commemorative coin issued by the UK when Prince Charles married Princess Diana in 1981. I was working at the Third Nuclear Power Plant at the time. One time I met a British couple who were traveling to Taiwan from the UK at the beach in Nanwan. The following year they came to Taiwan again, so I invited them to travel to Tainan. Dr. Devin is a recently retired doctor. His wife Peggy even wrote down their encounter with me in Hengchun in her diary and showed it to me. This silver coin is the souvenir they gave me. Peggy also told me that this is a commemorative coin blessed by the Pope. I corresponded with them for more than 20 years until Mr. and Mrs. Devin passed away one after another.

Pana-vue Slide viewer

Before I bought a slide projector, I bought this film viewer to screen slides. The original uses a 1.5 V dry cell as power source. The rectifier transformer was installed by me later. This viewer has a special effect that creates level in certain colors, so the slides look three-dimensional.

Harmonica

到了電腦實驗室側門樓梯口正要上樓時,忽然聽見 "Thank you for the wonderful music."

The harmonica is the only musical instrument in my family. Both of my parents can play the harmonica. But for some reason, they never taught me. I started teaching myself to play the harmonica when I was in junior high school. The reason is that I have had a very good sense of relative pitch since I was a child, and I can write down the simple score while listening to music. So it is easy to play the music I hear with the harmonica. When I was in senior high school, I used my pocket money to buy a Japanese-made Butterfly brand harmonica in the key of C. Later, when my mother's cousin back from Japan, he gave me a Yamaha harmonica in A key and a chromatic harmonica. So there are three harmonicas on hand. Because the harmonica is easy to carry, I took it with me when I went abroad to study.
One time I was walking across campus at dusk, from my dorm to the computer lab. I walked in the gentle evening breeze, holding my harmonica and playing Taiwanese folk songs and other folk songs. When I reached the side door of the computer lab and was about to go upstairs, I suddenly heard "Thank you for the wonderful music." I looked back and saw a group of American students following me. I smiled, nodded and went upstairs. Just a few weeks ago, I introduced the making of traditional Taiwanese toilet paper to my classmates. After the speech, I received a lot of applause and friendship. It also invisibly brings us closer to each other. This rare harmonica experience once again impressed me with the American character of never being reluctant to praise others.

Pegasus Sewing Machine and Overlock Machine (MIMA Sewing Machine MFG Co., Ltd)

After World War II, all industries in Taiwan were in recession and ordinary people lived in extreme hardship. In 1949, the Kuomintang army and civilians moved into Taiwan, local people's lives became even more difficult. My family's original small garment processing factory also closed down when my father fell ill. In 1953, we moved from the bustling Central District of Tainan City to a rented house behind the more remote Yamuliao Market in the Northern District. When I was in elementary school, I felt hungry and cold. It was not until I entered junior high school that my parents started working as garment OEM workers and our family's financial situation gradually improved. The money-making tools used at that time, such as sewing machines and overlock machine, were all second-hand. Since we cannot afford professional technicians, simple machine maintenance work falls to me. Although these Japanese-made machines are old, they are quite durable. It is still operating normally after 60 years. Even though my parents have passed away for many years, I still can't bear to throw it away. Maintain and lubricate it regularly and keep it as a memory of my childhood.
