サンドレスの話
来る日も来る日も、ぼくはコンピューターに台湾語の話し方を教えている。だが先頃ぼくは、何かをテーマにして台湾語で文章を書いてみようと思い立った。そうすれば、ぼくのテキスト・トゥ・スピーチのプログラムのさまざまな機能を試してみることができるはずだ。そんなことを思いついたのは、数日前に日本に住む友人からメールを受け取ったのがきっかけだった。彼女は娘と会い昼食をともにして、とても楽しかったと書いていた。
その話は次のようなものだ。

水曜日に私は美術館で娘の悠に会い、色彩が奔放に舞い踊る絵を見てから、昼食を食べました。
暑い日だったけれど、娘は自転車でやって来ました。彼女のところからだと、電車がとても便利なのですが。自転車だと50分もかかった、と彼女は言いました。
しかも彼女は、私の昔のワンピースを着ていました。とてもきれいな色合いですが、肩には細いストラップがついているだけ。彼女の肩は赤く日焼けしていました。
それにしても、私の洋服を着ている人とお喋りしながら食事をするというのは、妙な気分でした。なんだか私自身と話をしているような。

ささやかな話に過ぎない。けれど最後の文章がいい。若いころの思い出と、母親が娘を思いやる気持ちが、彼女の心を魔法のタイムマシーンで溌剌たる青春時代へと運んだ。冴えた一文だ。書き手はたった一行の文章で、複雑な心の綾を鮮やかに描き出している。ぼくはO.ヘンリーの短篇を思い出した。彼の作品にはどれも忘れがたい結末が埋め込まれている。
ぼくには彼女のような経験はない。けれどそのときの彼女の気持ちがよく分かる。
The story of a sundress
I have been teaching my computer how to speak Taiwanese language day after day. Recently I decided to write an article on some special topic in Taiwanese, so that my Taiwanese text-to-speech program could be tested for more functions. The main reason why I got the idea was that a friend of mine living in Japan gave me a mail a couple days ago. She told me that she had a pleasant time with her daughter when they met and had lunch together.
The following is her story.

I met my daughter Yu on Wednesday in an art museum and enjoyed beautiful paintings together with lunch.
It was a hot day. But she came by bicycle, although taking a train was more convenient for her. It took about 50 minutes by bicycle, she said.
Besides she was wearing an one-piece which used to be mine. It had beautiful colors but it had only thin straps to cover her shoulders. Her shoulders were suntanned already.
It's a funny feeling chatting and eating lunch with a person who was wearing MY clothes. It was like chatting with ME.

It was a short story. However, the last sentence was quite marvelous. A memory of good old days and mother's affection seemed to bring her back to her brilliant youth by a magic time machine. What a talent. The author used only one sentence to interpret such a complicated feeling. It reminded me the short stories of O. Henry. Each one of them had an unforgettable ending of the story.
Although I didn’t have the same experience, I could understand what she thought at that moment.

每天都在教電腦說台灣話。今天忽然想到要用台語寫一篇比較特別的文章，讓電腦讀讀看。主要是因為幾天前收到一位日本朋友寄來的信。她提到一些和她女兒一塊吃午飯時發生的趣事。
這篇文章就是她寫的故事。

這個星期三，我和我女兒-悠，相約在美術館看畫展，順便一道吃午餐。
那天太陽很大。雖然坐火車很方便，悠卻騎著腳踏車來。她說她花了大約五十分鐘才到達。她穿著一件我曾經穿過的露背裝。那件洋裝的花色很漂亮，不過肩帶很細。她的肩膀已經被陽光曬紅了。
跟一個穿著我的衣服的人一起聊天、吃飯，實在很好玩。感覺就像和自己在說話一般。

這個故事很短，不過最後一句話讓我覺得很有意思。媽媽疼惜女兒的心情和對往事的懷念交織，彷彿自己也重回當年的青春的歲月。
這種複雜的心境，能用寥寥數語表達，實在不容易。也讓我想起 O. Henry 的短篇小說，這個故事也有精彩的結尾。
雖然無法體驗自己對自己說話的感覺，卻可以理解作者當時的心情。
